Well, I have both 2.2.18 and 2.4.2 on my box from RPM and I can boot into either. I used the new modutils and 2.4.2 RPM that SuSE provided on the ftp site...they both work and I have no issues. I wouldn't suggest something I hadn't already tried. The above approach works.
Actually, modutils should work with older kernels. However, I also had a problem with the SuSE rpm for modutils-2.4.2 while using the SuSE 2.4.0 kernel. For some reason, I could not get any modules to load. I am now using the SuSE modutils-2.4.2 with a self-compiled 2.4.3 kernel, and everything works fine. - v -- Victor R.
