Ah, that was the setting for text mode. I had forgotten that command. The manual says that APM is used if available. I tried "setterm -blank poke", no go. The thing is, I certainly prefer the display to be off, since this machine I handle via ssh and leave it running to download big things, with main computer off. Display off saves some power on the ancient power supply, and spares the probably old fluorescent tubes that light it up. But the thing does not recover! :-(
Somewhere in /etc/xorg.co* I also do:
Option "DPS" "off"
Yes, that one I knew. It should be DPMS, though.
Then again, I'm not a laptop user, except for one infrequently used antique with r128.
