That's the reason why I asked your where to find systemctl.
I think your system is most probably running postfix, so once you're in a terminal window, you can try starting it:
systemctl start postfix.service.
As long as I don't know where to find systemctl, I can't start it.
What openSUSE version do you use? In versions before 12.2, you better use (as root; the commands are in /usr/sbin, which is in root's path, but not in the PATH of the user): rcpostfix status rcsendmail status - one of these should work.
