Did you download and compile the modutils for kernel 2.4.0? This may have been installed automatically on RedHat if you used RPM. Do a 'insmod -V' to find out what version of modutils you have.
sure thing. sorry i did not mention this obvious detail:
%> modprobe --version modprobe version 2.4.0 [...]
I also downloaded, compiled and installed modutils-2.4. I don't understand how modutils is supposed to work, but it looks messed up to me. jerry@JLKreps:~ > /sbin/modprobe -c # Generated by modprobe -c (2.4.0) path[boot]=/lib/modules/boot <--- doesn't exist path[toplevel]=/lib/modules/2.4.0 <--- correct path[toplevel]=/lib/modules/2.4 <--- doesn't exist path[kernel]=/lib/modules/kernel <-- s/b /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel ??? path[fs]=/lib/modules/fs <-- s/b /lib/modules/2.4.0/fs ??? path[net]=/lib/modules/net <-- s/b /lib/modules/2.4.0/net ??? path[scsi]=/lib/modules/scsi --- same for the rest. ??? path[block]=/lib/modules/block path[cdrom]=/lib/modules/cdrom path[ipv4]=/lib/modules/ipv4 path[ipv6]=/lib/modules/ipv6 path[sound]=/lib/modules/sound path[fc4]=/lib/modules/fc4 path[video]=/lib/modules/video path[misc]=/lib/modules/misc path[pcmcia]=/lib/modules/pcmcia path[atm]=/lib/modules/atm path[usb]=/lib/modules/usb path[ide]=/lib/modules/ide path[ieee1394]=/lib/modules/ieee1394 path[mtd]=/lib/modules/mtd Currently, though, everything is running fine except for the OSS sound software, which won't install.
