-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Uhm... no actually these changes are qt/kde specific.. if no other display manager is starting, do you have success in starting X with "startx kde2" ( f.ex ) ? If that's not possible either, then I'd look at the X configuration itself. IF on the other hand you can start X with startx, then your best shot is to add lots of debug lines to the xdm script, to try to find where it bails out. ( I do it with lots of lines like ' echo "now setting this variable" >>/tmp/my_startx.log ' ) Then there is another possibility... There is ONE problem with a system like /etc/rc.config, being that if you forget to put a '"' sign in there, or have one too many, it bombs out with lots of funny error messages, but _seems_ to run anyhow. Such an error messed a lot up for me once, but if everything seems ok except for xdm I wouldn't quite know... Keep me posted :-) Regards, Tor Sigurdsson ( tosi )
The only other thing is that its not KDE2 specific....Gnome or any other wm will not work either. I am not at home yet, but have incorporated what you have suggested.
Will it work with other wm's? I know Ximian code will not launch, nor will any other window manager..
Been so busy and having fun on Linux I have not touched Windows since Wednesday or Thursday, and that was due to a game...

Hmm... are you perhaps trying to mix KDE2 and QT1 ?
my $QTDIR is /usr/lib/qt2 which is a symbolic link:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Des 9 01:55 /usr/lib/qt2 -> qt-2.2.2
oh... yes :) I added to my /sbin/init.d/xdm these lines
export QTDIR=/opt/kde/lib export QT2DIR=/usr/lib/qt2 export KDEDIR=/opt/kde export KDE2DIR=/opt/kde2
and then changed "DISPLAYMANAGER=/opt/kde/bin/kdm" to point to /opt/kde2/bin/kdm...
Prolly that's the solution ;-)

The directory is /usr/lib/qt/
Not sure on the error message as I will have to try that when I get home (remote accessing through to home machine).
Thanks :-)

Hi,
I don't have /etc/pam.d/kdm either, AND I do have the "session required /lib/security/pam_devperm.so" in /etc/pam.d/xdm, so that's NOT your problem. I use kdm as a login manager on five workstations ( three intel boxes and two sun sparc boxes ) along with KDE 2.0. All work as planned
:-)
I havn't followed this thread closely, but there is one problem that springs to mind - what is your QTDIR before kdm is executed ? Oh... and do you get in your logs something about xdm not being able to find "XBINDIR/something" ?

Do not seem to have the kdm file in pam.d, that could be the cause too.
Anyone got the settings please? I can re-create it the pam.d directory and re-run it tonight.

In the relevant files (xdm/kdm/gdm) in /etc/pam.d, comment out any reference to pam_devperm.so - this will be included in 7.1, but you can get away without it in previous versions. This will allow your *dm to work.
