Unfortunately its pcmcia - I suppose it could be 'ejected then inserted' either the hard way or via the commandline - would thathelp me?

If you can't get it going, I can send you some command line scripts that should work to get ppp up. Another thing to look for is: under add user in yast, make sure the "access to modem" box is checked for each dialout user.
