I wonder why? What was the problem that needed solving? What's wrong with having Xfce as an official openSUSE desktop option on the User Interface page? The wide choice of desktops is one of openSUSE's strengths.
The discussion is in the mailing list archives. The foundational reason as I remember is this screen is the first exposure a n00b sees and devs do not want an overwhelming number of selections presented, but rather simply, the two flagship DEs plus server. Experienced users know that selecting custom, and then /details/, one is presented with every possible choice that does not depend on any optional repo.
