Hangs with a blinking cursor :-(
It's awfully hard to say what your problem is, Tell me about it :-(
but we can make some "educated" guesses. Ok :-)
If the boot starts but then hangs with a blinking cursor, it seems to point to a video problem. Are you using "framebuffer support"? Are you trying to boot to a graphical login? It's safer to boot to a console.
I am booting to a text login console - I (always) startx after I've logged in.
Another possibility is that you don't have the root filesystem support built in to the kernel. Are you using reiserfs as root. Did you build it into the kernel, if not did you make a proper initrd to load the reiserfs module?
I am using reiserfs - it's an encrypted file system which comes up fine under 'failsafe'. I also did a mk_initrd lilo following another suggestion, from Mannfred. But this had no visible effect after a reboot - it just hung at the same point, so I suspect that is not the problem. Though I have placed this in the list of 'always do this at every recompile' commands, for future reference. I had assumed using 'make oldconfig' would pull in exactly the same system, and I would just make one small change (processor), and recompile - this should work as I describe it, right?
The first thing I would try is to remove the framebuffer support from the kernel, Via menuconfig I have this:
[*] VGA text console [ ] Video mode selection support
and see if you can boot to a console. Boot from your rescue system, and do what you need to do in suse8.0 to switch to an ascii logon.
You've lost me here -what's the difference between 'a console' and an 'ascii logon'?
Then recompile the kernel and turn the framebuffer off. Make sure you build-in reiserfs support if you use it, otherwise you need mk_initrd to make your new initrd.
As above - this is all done - and we hang at exactly the same point, with the same behaviour :-( Richard Foley Ciao - shorter than Aufwiedersehen -- ps. sorry about the ubs sig.
