Fred, Sorry for the slow reply. I try not to spend too much time infront of the screen at the w/e. It sounds like you haven't successfully run the mysql_install_db script. You **have** to do this before you can start the mysql server. After you've done that if you want mysql to start automatically when you boot the computer you have to change the configuration file. If you have run the script but haven't rebooted then the myslq server hasn't been started. This can probably be done with the command: './bin/safe_mysqld &' Hope this helps.
