. . .
this fixes the error message in that it doesn't show: export LC_ALL=C [can be added to bash profile]
but the fonts are still very small.........emacs seems unaffected. The only reason I found this is because when I was changing my fstab from the rescue terminal, emacs crashed. Sorry this does seem like a little thing.

I'm not sure how well xemacs (or even emacs) is supported under openSUSE. Myself, I build emacs from Git (but then I'm a contributor to the project, with a pile of customizations to support). If xemacs is your customary editor and you have trouble with it in future (and don't have a pile of xemacs-specific customizations of your own), you might consider using emacs instead.

Thanks Bob , I've used emacs for many years. I think I changed to xemacs because I thought it was for the graphical desktop. You appear to be right as emacs works well with the desktop. I still don't know why emacs was crashing in the rescue terminal, oh well, as long as one of them works. This one I got from the opensuse repositories figuring that was the best place to look. Thanks again, mike
