I'm just wondering if _autologin_ is possible with a window manager
like Openbox.
Yes, it is.
Then the question is, how to achieve that.
What you did not understand in "login to openbox and this choice will be
remembered"?
If I issue this command:

   update-alternatives --config default-displaymanager

then I can see that lightdm is my default display manager.

But this simple display manager, is this lightdm?

I am not offered any desktop environment choice, and it still logs into
MATE. ??
