ok, my 9.2 CD's just came in the mail !!!!!!!!!!!!! and Amazon said Nov 15th was the ship date, they lied!!
ok, when I installed 9.1 I just made a root and swap partition. I'd like to make a separate /home partition. I don't want to lose my current /home/users setup, so what's the best/easiest way to add a new /home partition?? shouldI add it first before I upgrade? or copy ( backup?) the /home directory to another partition, and add it during the uprade?????
I would vote to do it before the upgrade...... but it's really a toss-up. 1) Define the new partition. (watch out for changing the numbers of your current partitions in /etc/fstab) 2) Format the new partition. 3) mount /dev/hdax /mnt (mount it) 4) rsync -auvzr /home/ /mnt/ (copy it) 5) mount /dev/hdax /home 6) Add an entry in /etc/fstab for the new /home partition. Note: The above will leave all of your current /home files 'hidden' behind the mount of the new partition. When you are satisfied your new partition is safely in place, then: 1) unmount /home 2) Make sure /home got umounted by issuing 'mount' (/home should not be shown) 3) cd /home 4) rm -r * Be very careful what you are doing with the above so as to not erase all your files from the new partition.
