You probably suppress Recommended packages by default.

If a option is already installed, the option "-f" or "--force" must also be added to the command-line to get the wanted re-evalution, e.g.:
#> zypper -v in --force --recommends -t pattern lxde
Personally I'd recommend also adding "--details" to the command line
