Dunno how pricy is Lucent but perhaps it is in the same price range as Cisco 350 which works great with Linux (you get drivers off of Cisco web page) and wep works great too say with Linksys AP BEFW11S4. Martin --- jeff@fifthecho.com wrote:
Hi All,
I just joined this group and been reading numerous entries in this and other groups regarding wireless network cards for Linux. It seems that many folks are struggling to get them configured and working. I just purchased a Linksys WPC11 card after calling Linksys and receiving confirmation that they thought it would work. When it didn't work I did some more reading and learned that I had purchased a v.4 card which has a Realtek chipset which isn't going to be plug-n-play.
Can anyone recommend a pcmcia wireless card that will just work after I insert it, or work with a minimum of fuss?
thanks, Larry
I can vouch for the Lucent Orinoco WiFi card. I bought one several months ago and have yet to have a single issue with it working under Linux with 3 different laptops...
should be a good start to find one.
Personally, I would recommend saving a few dollars and buying the Orinoco Silver card as the only difference between the Silver and Gold (as far as my research told me when I looked into it several months ago) is that the Gold has the ability to use a proprietary 128-bit WEP system that only Orinoco Gold equipment can utilize properly...which, AFAIK, isn't usable in Linux...
I'm very happy with my Lucent Orinoco Silver card.
