I've had 3 IDE disks die on my 9.3 desktop this year. I'm the only one in my office that runs Linux on the desktop and also the only one with problems. Put it down to bad luck rather than OS. I had a similar issue. My laptop was bought new in July. From then until October I ran 9.3 - I had three occasions where my system would go down and require a fsck -rebuild. I never lost data, and keep a KDAR DVD handy anyway, but it was wierd. So far I haven't had the issue at all after re-formatting and upgrading to 10.0.
