To my surprise that worked. However, the ripped and encoded files will be on a Linux fileserver which will be accessed by a Windows mp3 player (iTunes). Will changing the file extension cause a problem in that environment? Alternatively, do you know where I can get a copy of lame in an rpm somewhere?
