Look for keywords "Takashi Iwai" among the openSUSE resources. He seems to be the primary if not only *SUSE * dev up to speed on this stuff.
Thanks Felix for your wonderful reply, glad to see this is already bug reported, and rebooting did restore the sound. SO I will let that be my solution for now and if I get a few spare cycles I might poke at it further.
