I'm running SuSE 5.2 with a 2.0.35 kernel and I'm compiling support for my PnP SB16 card directly into my kernel. As long as I run "isapnp" to configure my sound card's I/O addresses, IRQ, and DMA values, sound is working fine for me. I downloaded the entire 2.0.35 kernel source tarball from the SuSE FTP site. Are people compiling sound in by non-modular means also experiencing problems? Just wondered. This appears only to affect people who are using modularized sound with their kernels.

Since there are so many different sound cards, we cannot provide a sound module that is working for all of them. In addition to that, more and more people are using OSS. Therefore we have made the decision, to comment out the sound module line in /etc/conf.modules. This is why you still can manually load it, but kerneld won't. We had a lot of support requests from people, who crashed their machines because kerneld attempted to load the sound module on machines which where not properly configured. All you have to do is to reactivate this line in /etc/conf.modules. Look for the string "alias char-major-14" and make sure, there's no "#" in front of it and the second column reads "sound", not "off".
