Volume Controls show up but don't work

Hi all ~ My volume control (and the full kmix program) does not seem to affect the volume of many applications, including realplayer and other media players. Also, the application volume controls also don't always work... Any ideas? Using SuSE 10.1 on an HP Pavillion dv6105us laptop with centronix high-definition audio.
