[opensuse] Troubleshooting "no sound" problem - HDA Intel PCH

All, I have a new to me Dell laptop that I'm trying openSUSE on. My first big problem is a lack of sound. I created a bugzilla, but I suspect good troubleshooting can resolve it. I'm just not good at troubleshooting sound card issues: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=805865 Any advice on next steps? fyi: yes, I'm testing with 12.3 RC1, but I have no reason to think this is a 12.3 specific bug.
