reinitialize optical drives without rebooting

Dear all: Sometimes my optical drives (CD-ROM) hang up and I have to reboot the computer if I want to use the again. How could I reinitialize them without rebooting? eg unloading and reloading the drivers or doing something simliar by hand that init process does.
