network install 8

Hi, I am trying to do a network install on a laptop with a semi-busted cd drive. The correct pcmcia modules seem to load ok ( message on screen and appropriate beeps from the hardware ) and the card is recognised correctly but it seems that the card is not powering up ( ie no light coming on on the lead ) hence it all hangs at the "mount remote directory" bit. Where should I start to look to force the card to power up? Many TIA F
