I used to think this until I discovered a few uses for letting them hang around.1. It leaves a record of everything I had to change to get the package to work: all the makefile and configure and whatever junk else. 2. Some Makefiles provide an uninstall facility: "make uninstall" removes the package. 3. Cheesy but easy place to keep the miscellaneous documentation. Now that disk space is really cheap, my /usr/local/src is getting big!
