I have some (not all that useful) widgets, and I have a panel with often used Apps and then the normal KDE menu (oldschool). My 4 desktops are covered with open applications most of the time, so icons on the desktop would be buried anyway. Icons would add to the clutter, but add nothing in usefulness.
Similar here, 8 desktops, among which only one can be seen peeking out from behind open app windows more than a wee bit most of the time. Even if they were visible, most wouldn't really be visible, because the only way I can be sure what most of them mean is from a balloon that pops up on hover.
