KDE2, where are the menu icons?

I just installed the latest KDE2 update for SuSE 7.0 (downloaded from SuSE's ftp site) and to my surprise I found that most of the icons in the K menu are gone! I checked the message archive and found a short discussion on the subject but it is talking about compiling your own QT library, which is different then my case. How can I get my menu icons back?
