And, I also recommend that you master the use of vim. I second this. It's not that difficult, and you don't really need to be an expert with it. Just fire off google search and enter "vi cheat sheet". You'll be presented with a plethora of articles to read or pdf's to print. Then play around with it in a c/konsole.
Dunno if it's still true, but back in the old days of SUNOS (pre-Solaris) if forced into a command prompt, after failed boot, vi was about the only tool available to fix things (the copy for root was statically linked at compile time so it didn't require any outside help). Saved my bacon more than a few times.
