Ian, no one can answer your question if you don't write down what you did, step by step.
I used the Folder Properties on a folder called Tumbleweed that is described in Kmail as a "Mailing List" and selected the "Subscribe to list " option and pressed <Invoke Hander> and it opens an email to send to "factory- join@lists.opensuse.org" with no subject or body (apart from my signature) and i just sent it just like that.
