I suggest you try to remember latest operations you made before noticing the issue you're facing.
- Looks system log messages for any trace of the problem - Verify /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager correctness - If you didn't discover nothing then try to reboot and choose Failsafe - If you again don't escape out of the problem, try to post again providing more informations. Seems I managed to get rid of this problem by manipulating services, but do not know what helped. Possibly, enabling xdm.orig service (xdm was already enabled).
A bit hard to say: "yes, it was it, or not it doesn't"; in any case glad you solved! I used to fall in same kind of doubts whenever I issue many modifications and tests on the system, then if something fails is more difficult to discover the cause.
