Note that the method of ffmpeg installation always recommended by the ffmpeg developers is to use the latest git head version from www.ffmpeg.org. Yes, it is a bit more work (for example, making sure all the dev dependencies are met), but once installed keeping it up to date is as simple as git pull, make, sudo make install (I have this scripted with a couple of extra steps (git pull, make distclean, configure, make, sudo make install). The default installation directory using this method is /usr/local/bin/, but that is easily fixed with a configure option.
