[opensuse] Problem with e-mail login

I just got a new pc on which I installed opensuse 11.4. I tried setting up Thunderbird 3.1.10 but I kept getting errors with login. It always reported that I had used a wrong id or password. I had set it up just as my win7 Thinderbird 3.1.7 which works. after messing with it for a while I gave up and changed to kmail where I have the same problem. I am using the KDE manager. I haven't found any google items with this problem. Can anyone give me some help or direction?
