But it is part of the Linux standard, so to say, to have "/tmp", and that it is the default temporary disk space. It is already a standard. Changing it would break things. It is just up to the system administrator to decide if HE wants /tmp to be a directory in "/", a separate disk partition, or tmpfs. HE decides, based on what he is going to use the machine for. Distributions just make sensible defaults, allowing the administrators to change them. They simply make defaults that should work for most people.
