I print photos just fine from my Linux laptop on my laserjet, in colour, at the maximum resolution of my printer. I don't use special paper. I can print many of them without noticing the toner expenditure, and I print big. I watched a friend of mine trying to print just two photos on special paper, with an ink printer, from Windows. He wasted half a dozen or more of those expensive sheets, while changing adjustements, getting weird colours and low resolution.
