IMO the importing of MS files into Staroffice is better than OO 1.0. Mostly in that OO converted all the hyphens and quotation marks to question marks, whereas Staroffice appears to import correctly. Staroffice also appears to handle powerpoint slightly better than OO.
The current Staroffice 6.0 handles import of MS formats very well, but not perfectly. While perfection is desirable, I believe that expecting perfection is unrealistic. My experience with Wordperfect Office and Lotus Smartsuite (plus earlier with Describe) is that a very good import is as good as it gets. Similarly the exchange of files between MS 97 and MS XP tends to be very good but also not perfect.

Ralph, As I understand it, Staroffice 6 is suppose to come with a Wordperfect filter, where OO does not. I remember hearing someone mention that it did not have it, yet Sun and every other ad mentions it being there. Can you confirm or deny the existence of a WP filter and if so, had a chance to test it also?

Having now installed staroffice 6 on a windows box in addition to the linux computers I can now answer the question. Staroffice does include a filter for Wordperfect, in the windows version of SO. Doing a custom install on each system and selecting the import filters to install; in linux the wordperfect selection is non-functional, in windows it works. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government?
