Well, support for /usr/etc/nsswitch.conf is really minimal - it simply tries to open it if /etc/nsswitch.conf does not exist. You certainly can open a bug report.
Yeah, I know :-) I have created a symlink instead. Wrt $SUBJ - my logrotate changes didn't work. I created a /etc/logrotate.d/syslog with new definitions for /var/log/messages and /var/log/mail, but it seems it was ignored. Not in any way critical of course.
