I hate to point out the obvious, but can you hook this drive directly to a SATA port on the machine? That way you can get direct access. It could be a problem with the partitioning. Or at least try this: cfdisk /dev/sdc cfdisk is a little easier to use(more like DOS's fdisk). If it can't read the disk, it will spit out an error message.
