I create the slides for my students. Some like to download the slides and print them in class and take notes on them. The classroom is a computer lab with Windows boxes. Next year they are talking about removable disks, but right now the students telnet into a Unix cluster. Additionally, many companies use MS Word and Power Point as the standard for information interchange. I like OO for composing, but if I am unable to produce useful Power Point documents, it limits the usefulness.
Not sure what you are trying to say. As a standalone message I do, but since your email is a response to mine I don't see the relevance? I said StarOffice has better filters (commercial ones) than the free OpenOffice (but is the same, otherwise, same code base).

I don't think the MS filters in "OpenOffice" are as good as the ones in StarOffice (6.0). This is, after all, one of the reasons Sun wants to/will sell a commercial product. I've got SO 6.0 (for some time, the final, not beta ;-) ) but I can't say how good it is, I haven't had to export any powerpoint stuff. I never had any trouble importing MS Word files though.
