Sorry I stand corrected, even the NetworkManager does not register the when I plug in the network cable until about 3-5 minutes after I plugin. Sam. On Wed, Oct 20, 2010 at 9:41 AM, Shaffin Bhanji <shaffin.bhanji@gmail.com> wrote:
I looked at the log and nothing registers when I plug in the network cable. I am attaching the NetworkManager log file that clearly shows a time delay of about 3 minutes.

Hello,
I have setup SUSE 11.3 x86_64 on my laptop and everything seems fine except that when I plug a network cable into the laptop NIC port, the network takes about 5 minutes before it initializes and responds. It is annoying to wait for about 5-7 minutes for the network card to be available.
Maybe DHCP is slow to respond?
I did confirm that its not the DHCP that is taking long - I can also that that as soon as I see the NetworkManager applet shows up (after 5-6 minutes) on the desktop that DHCP takes less than a second.
So it's really just taking so long to report that a cable got connected? Try looking on the console (Ctrl-Alt-F10) when you plug the cable in. You should see the auto-negotiate happen pretty much immediately.
