I set that. And then rebooted and sound is back. I wonder what other groups i was turfed from.

Confirmed here too, thanks. Hopefully someone will find out what caused the breakage so it won't reoccur.
I also could not get Skanlite to access my scanner as a normal user until I added the user to the "lp" group and rebooted again (prior to the update, I could access the scanner; I don't recall explicitly adding my user to the lp group, maybe that was done automatically when I installed the scanner driver).
