Can it be because you do not have privileges to run Pidgin? As he says, you did not specify where did get Pidgin from. Try to remove it and re-install it using YaST. I installed it using YaST and compiled it later, and in both cases it worked fine. James Pifer wrote:

You do not say where this Pidgin came from - did you compile it yourself?
My original version was rpm version 2.5.3 from one of the opensuse repos. But I also compiled from source with version 2.5.4.
