I've been using Suse for quite a while. I don't think it is too much to ask for my dvd and burner to work. Any suggestions on how to make that occur. (Both cdburner and dvd worked fine under 7.3 and continue to work under windows 98) I recently decided to update to 8.1 from 7.3. This was a clean install from a dvd drive. The system has a dvd as hdc and a burner as hdd. I found the note about 8.1 and ide drives (whose bright idea was that anyway?) and did indeed make the modifications to the sysconfig/kernal file. and updated the initrd. INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs cdrom ide-cd ide-scsi" my etc/fstab is. fstab /dev/hdb3 / reiserfs defaults 1 1 /dev/hdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/hda1 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,iocharset=iso8859-1,code=437 0 0 /dev/hdb2 swap swap pri=42 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0 /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0 I've tried variations in the fstab of /dev/sr0 /dev/sr1 /dev/hdc /dev/hdd for the cdrom and dvd also grub has the following lines in it (any real reason to use grub rather than lilo?). title linux kernel (hd1,0)/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb3 hdd=ide-scsi vga=788 initrd (hd1,0)/initrd -- Dr. Roy F.
