after trouble with Acrobat reader, I just downloaded from freshmeat, <xpdf> ~ it works fine :)
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, it's OK for basic use. However, it is limited -- limited support for links and annotations, for instance: you won't get bookmarks and thumbnails shown, as fas as I can see. In any case, I reckon Acrobat Reader should be one of those "definitive" programs that just has to work, coming as it does from the home of PostScript and PDF.
