Well, thanks everyone who responded with help. Here's how I fixed everything. For those of you not following this thread, the problem began with kernel 2.2.10. I had recompiled it for the umpteenth time and all of a sudden LILO wouldn't boot anymore. I was able to boot from an older 2.2.10 boot floppy. No amount of wrangling around I could try was allowing me to get things back to normal. Finally I went into /usr/src and typed: rm -r linux. Installed kernel 2.2.10 again and recompiled from scratch and LILO works again. Why I couldn't recompile with the existing 2.2.10 is a mystery - apparently it somehow got corrupted!?!
