Using the repo you advised created MANY conflicts when I ran zypper dup --from KDE_4-8. Finally gave up after 7 or 8. Apparently not everything has been brought up to date yet.
strange, i didn't get any unresolveable issues. were you using app.s from KDE/Extra and/or KDE/Unstable:/Playground? in that case you'd have to add the corresponding repo.s for 4.8, too. and then, while doing zypper dup, you'd get issues that can be solved by allowing to switch to packages from "excluded repos," which refers to extra & playground.
otherwise i guess i just was lucky...
Have you run into: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275469 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292057 while using KDE4.8? As soon as I installed from the Upstream repo, I ran smack into these bugs and the Task Manager and even Panel became completely unusable. So much so, I had to roll back to KDE4.7.4 (where the bug is only a minor annoyance vs completely breaking things like it does in KDE4.8). You say you didn't run into any unresolvable issues... Are you using a different Qt build/version? The default one for 12.1? Anything else? How did you work around the bug? Or if you haven't seen it, I'd be interested in what is different between your and my KDE4.8 installs.
