Adding xdm to the level 2 initscripts is equivalent to setting level 3... (Unless I did something wrong of course; I simply copied the link to xdm from the level 3 script without changing the name.)
I can live with initlevel 3 after all though: I can still login at a different virtual console if I stay disciplined ;-) (the resources used by the graphical login alone are probably extremely small).

Dear Evert, Sincere appologies. It is my fault. I should have thought before to speak. But here is the solution: Check /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers. Notice that xdm fires up a chooser at the local console. Rem this out and you won't have have a chooser at the console anymore. HTH.
