I overreacted re. my disappointment over 5.3 and I apologize for making public posts concerning my frustration before I had investigated the problem fully. This is what I have been able to determine with a fair amount of certainty so far: 1. Sound is partially broken in 5.3, but if you use OSS (I have tried both 3.9x and 3.7x with complete success on an AWE32 pnp) you should be ok. If you uncomment sound in /etc/conf.modules you can use a modular kernel-based sound driver _BUT_ anything that uses /dev/dsp appears to be broken (no midi at all, most games use /dev/dsp so no games for the most part). mp3 and cd players all seem to work fine. 2. Using isapnp to initialize your joystick port may indeed provide functioning joystick support while using OSS for sound. I have determined that version1.2.9 of the linux kernel joystick driver is what was breaking my joystick, I have resumed using version1.2.7 and it works fine now(I can't test this in 5.3 because I do not have 5.3 installed). So, I probably could end up with a functional 5.3 install now that I know what I do. Frankly, if my system is broke, I should be the one to break it. I blew my cool because 5.3 appeared to be broken out of the box. Well, it wasn't completely 5.3's fault, but 5.3 does have issues regarding sound, your mileage may vary. I trust S.u.S.E. will be able to figure out what is breaking kernel sound in 5.3 and let us know when there is a fix. I apologize to Lenz, Hubert, Bodo, and all of the list subscribers for my reaction on the list. I should have been more patient and waited to post. Hopefully you all realize that being human we all do things that we would have handled differently given the passage of time. -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A</A>> \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
