I tried your way, and it does not work:
"FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted"
It has worked for me over a dozen times. Linux vms, windows vms and even one OpenBSD vm all created under VMware Workstation of various vintages. Your problems seems to be mostly PEBCAK problems.
