No, that won't work. The strfile util goes through the input file (with the fortunes) and produces an output file to make each fortune randomly accessible.
Someone in my local lug (SSLUG) helped me, and even sent me a patch and .spec file so I could make an rpm of the fortune-mod* tarball. I'm a fortunate man.
