I suppose my only frustration here is that I needed to do something that I consider very simple and I feel I shouldn't have had to read the manual, although I did so for about 20 minutes before giving up.
That would be a reasonable expectation for a program designed to be simple and easy-to-use. The Gimp is a very complicated, sophisticated, full-function raster image manipulation program. It's not reasonable to expect it to have a quick learning curve.
My thinking here is if I have to read a manual for more than 20 minutes to find out how to create a circle of any size and colour I need, without knowing where in the manual to look, then I'm going to ask someone else instead. I'm not lazy, I'm just impatient.
I'd suggest you've chosen the wrong tool.
