FWIW, if I mod-probe the dm-thinpool module, the 'vgchange -a y' installs all of the devices needed for thinpool device.
Well, what a coincidence! I don't use thin pools but I use exactly that command to set up the device mapper 'mappings' in /dev for the LVM facilities that I do make use of. Only I don't do it from the command line. Such things are taken care of by scripts. I'm sure that in the SysVInit days there was a /etc/init.d script that did it. These days there's a 'Start=' in lvm2-monitor.service that does it You may also find that there are udev rules that are pertinent to dm-mod LVM setup included in the initrd. Or need to be there.
