13.2 Hi I'd like to install cups 2.0.2 from the printing repository. I went to yast - software - software repositories - add
The only understandable guide I found was http://opensuse-guide.org/repositories.php
You may have noticed that many of use refer to 'zypper'. Yast is a shell that makes use of the zypper library. There is also a command line version named, naturally, 'zypper'. Command line version are easier to describe since we can give the text you type in. You should read the man page for zypper to see that the commands are. The Yast version simply presents a GUI. You can invoke Yast from the command line # yast2 repositories will give you the version of the GUI for managing, including adding, repositories # yast2 sw_single will give you the version of the GUI of course # yast2 --list will show you all the modules that are installed on your machine. With zypper you can ad more modules. # zypper search yast2 To add a repository, use the "ar" or "addrepo" subcommand. You will find this under the "Repository management" section of the man page. As it says, you can tell the system that the repository is in any one of a number of types of place: * a CD or DVD * a HTTP or FTP url * a directory on the machine * a network accessible directory via SAMBA (cifs, smb) or NFS
But no printing anywhere.
In this case you want a the URL option. if you read back through this thread we've told you what the URL for the Printing repository is. We've done that a number of times, so I'm going to let you make the effort to look it up, OK? if you read carefully you'll see the line/link "Go to download repository"
1. what is printing repository? 2. where is it? 3. how do I get it?
Stupid questions I know but if anyone has any idea what I'm on about, please help. Part of the problem is that I know what I want to do, but I don't know where to start or how to ask in linux vocab.
You always start by RTFM. There's often a manual page, and f you google there's something that amounts to a how-to. As it happen the page you referred to says explicitly: <quote> The official repositories are pre-configured, but many unofficial repositories exist and can be added too. </quote> It also says <quote> You can search for packages/repositories on the openSUSE BuildService here: http://software.opensuse.org/search </quote> Earlier in this thread when I referred you to sources/RPMs for CUPS2 that is what I used to find them. I also not that the part of that page titled "11.2 Repository Management in the Terminal" describes in detail all I've outlined above and more, including advising to read the man page and # zypper addrepo --help Searching with google is good. Not only will you find the wiki, https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Wiki but it will give you details of the build service http://openbuildservice.org/help/manuals/obs-reference-guide/ which is hos the contributors mentioned in the page you referenced build various things like CUPS2. The wiki is of course more user contributed stuff :-) https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Zypper ==> https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Zypper_usage ==> https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Zypper_usage#Adding_repositories https://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Printing ==> https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:How_to_set-up_a_HP_printer There is also says <quote> After the openSUSE 13.2 release it is planned to upgrade the printing system in the openSUSE build service development project "Printing" to CUPS 1.7 or CUPS 2.x plus cups-filters. </quote> and has links to https://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=Printing which you must surely recognise from earlier in this thread. I do have a question. Since all of the above can be found by https://www.google.ca/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=K5VKVfr8F4uN8QeTnYG4DQ#newwindow=1&q=how+to+add+respositories+in+opensuse how come you couldn't have done that? its not as if it take an amazing amount of google-fu; that's and obvious search string and all the rest comes though following links.
